Concussions and other traumatic brain injuries may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease according to a study from UT Southwestern’s Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute. The research use autopsy-confirmed cases of Alzheimer’s disease to examine the effects of head injuries.
An analysis from different cases found that people who sustained traumatic brain injury TBI with loss of consciousness more than five minutes were diagnosed with dementia on earlier than those who had not experienced TBI.
TBI might contribute to dementia later in life for some people, inflammation may occurs in the brain after a TBI, which may leads to development of neurodegeneration. Other genetic factors and unknown factors may also be responsible for Alzheimer disease.
