The skin’s natural moisturising factor (NMF) is less during the winter because the cold and intense sunlight disrupt the skin’s ability to produce natural moisturisers. Dry skin during winter can develop into permanent skin conditions like atopic eczema and rosacea.

NMF is lower the winter but higher in the summer, this leads to increase in nano-sized particles on the skin surface and it has been associated with dermatitis and the red, scratchy appearance of skin in cold weather.

Dermatis is an inflammation of the skin, depending on the type of dermatitis, areas of skin may become red and itchy with some acute attacks causing crusty scales or blisters that ooze fluid. Dry, reddish, itchy skin indicates some kind of dermatitis, or skin inflammation which are many.

Nummular dermatitis are red, itchy, circular patches, scaly, or encrusted skin. Common in adult. Seborrhoeic dermatitis-greasy, yellowish scales on the scalp and eyebrows. Persistent itchiness may signal atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema).

Cold and winter can make the skin less effective at moisturising itself.iThe skin finds it difficult to replenish its natural moisturiser and it starts to crack. The skin starts to inflame as a result, and this causes the red colour. Seasonal changes and weather can affect the skin, the skin should be protected with skin emollients in the winter and sunscreen in the summer.

Emollients are moisturising treatments that are applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. They cover the skin with a protective film that traps in moisture.
