Higher levels of male hormone testosterone in some women causes polycystic ovary sindrome, researchers at the University of Birmingham have found that this hormone increases the risk of higher levels of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Polycystic ovary syndrome causes irregular menstration, impaired fertility, male-pattern body hair growth and acne.
Women with PCOS are at risk non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Researchers compared health data of 63,000 women with PCOS to 120,000 women of similar age, body weight and background. Some women with PCOS have normal healthy weight, even if they have increased levels of testosterone. However, they are still significantly more likely to develop the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Women with PCOS need integrated health care throughout their life- before, during and after child birth. Taking testosterone to increase muscle power for sport competition is dangerous because of its side effects on liver.
