Scientists have developed the best ‘lifespan calculator’ which would be able to quantify cells’ age, as opposed to ‘chronological age’. The Yale University researchers said their measurements offer the most accurate, practical and easy-to-interpret result of any study to date since they largely used factors which are measured in an annual physical.
Doctors can extend their patients lifespan by tweaking their diet or exercise habits and identify ways to offset damaged cells. People may think they are healthy or sick because of how they feel, the lifespan calculator will give the correct state of health not feeling. This test could actually reveals people’s real risk, doctors can monitor those factors before they become a problem.
To determine which biomarkers are worth tracking, researchers analyzed 42 different measures that were available in the large data set NHANES (US National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys), a set of studies which tracks thousands of Americans for years. They selected 10,000 people from between 1988 and 1994, and identified factors which seemed to determine their risk of death.
Researchers looked at another set of 11,000 people between 1999 and 2010, and did the same. They used an algorithm – ‘elastic net model’ to measure which predictors were the strongest, and landed on nine biomarkers, including white blood cell count and globular protein levels.
