Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted, small and pathogenic bacterium that lives on the ciliated epithelial cells of the urinary and genital tracts. MG causes urethritis infection of the urethra in men, the urinary canal leading from the bladder to exit at the tip of the penis. In women, MG causes infection of the cervix.

Symptoms may include: abnormal discharge from the vagina, painful urination, and bleeding between periods, often after sex. It may cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women if not treated.

According to the The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), MG has the potential to become a superbug within a decade because of its resistant to standard antibiotics. The greatest consequence of this is pelvic inflammatory disease caused by MG, which would be very hard to treat and increased risk of infertility.

Most people who carry the MG infection have no symptoms but are still able to pass it on to others. Bad cases can cause painful inflammation for men, but can be more serious for women, causing womb scarring that makes women infertile.
