An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a device that allows users to inhale nicotine by heating a vapour from a solution that contain nicotine, propylene and flavourings. E-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, but the vapor contains some harmful chemicals. Nicotine is the highly addictive chemical which makes it difficult for smokers to quit.

Switching from smoking cigarette to e-cigarette increases the risk of heart disease. Vapers who smoked traditional cigarettes before switching to e-cigarettes are three times as likely to suffer a heart attack as someone who has never smoked. The researchers analysed the 2014 and 2016 results of The National Health Interview Survey, which includes interviews from adults living in the US.

Some 69,452 participants were asked about their smoke history, the participants were assessed for high cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as any diabetes diagnosis. Researchers discovered that smoking e-cigarettes daily increases the risk of heart attack by a factor of five, the risk of heart attack starts dropping when one quit smoking. People who smoked cigarette before switching to e-cigarettes have higher risk of having a heart attack, while those who do both daily are most at risk.
