A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head. Symptoms of a concussion tend to appear soon after an injury occurs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
If you or a loved one is playing a team sport and suspect a concussion, the agency suggests:
- Remove the player from the field.
- Seek immediate medical attention.
- Educate parents and other family members about the dangers of concussion and what to watch for.
- Require a doctor’s evaluation before a child returns to the field.
