Hair dyes vary in chemical make-up. People are exposed to the chemicals in hair dyes through skin contact. There are three main types of hair dyes:
Darker dyes have more of some chemicals that may cause cancer, some chemicals in hair dyes can be absorbed in small amounts through the skin or inhaled from fumes in the air.
People who work around hair dyes regularly as part of their jobs, such as hairdressers, stylists, and barbers, are at greater risk of cancer.

Temporary dyes cover the surface of the hair but don’t penetrate into the hair shaft, they generally last for one to two washings. Semi-permanent dyes do penetrate into the hair shaft. They typically last for five to ten washings.
Permanent (oxidative) hair dyes cause lasting chemical changes in the hair shaft. They are the most popular types of hair dyes, because the color remains until the hair is replaced by new growth.

These dyes are sometimes referred to as coal-tar dyes because of some of the ingredients in them. They contain colorless substances such as aromatic amines and phenols. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, these substances go through chemical reactions to become dyes.

Women should dye their hair not more than six times in a year and use natural ingredients to reduce the risk of cancer. Reducing exposure to synthetic dyes, relaxers and chemical hair treatments can reduce the risk of cancer, natural ingredients such as henna, shea butter, rose hip, and beetroot can replace synthetic dyes.

Regular exposure to hair dyes, relaxers and chemicals hair treatments may contribute to cancer risk. Women can reduce their risks of cancer by choosing hair treatment that contain the minimum concentration of aromatic amines. Hair treatments that consist of natural herbal ingredients such as rose hip, rhubarb, shea butter, beetroot are safe.
