Researchers analysed different fluoridated toothpastes and discovered that enamel loss still occurs to some extent despite brushing in the morning and night. Toothpastes can be used as part of oral-care regimen, good food and healthy lifestyles can prevent dental erosion. Dental erosion occurs when hard tissue is lost as a result of acidic break and abrasive brushing or tongue movements.

Continuous erosion can cause tooth sensitivity and pain, regular intake of processed foods and drinks exposed the teeth to acid which causes the erosion because of the acid contents in processed foods. Researchers created many enamel samples from premolar teeth, the samples were divided into 10 groups and exposed to equal amounts of erosive substance for five consecutive days while undergoing brushing.

Control group was exposed to saliva. Four of the groups were treated with toothpastes that claim to desensitize and the remainder with anti-erosive toothpaste.  After exposure to erosion and the toothpastes, the samples’ enamel surface loss was calculated.  Regular brushing of teeth can reduce the risk of throat cancer but not enough to prevent dental erosion. Dental erosion can be prevented by eating healthy diet, brushing in the morning and before going to bed and flossing after brushing.
