Type 1 diabetes is a form of diabetes in which not enough insulin is produced, this results in high blood sugar levels in the body. Common symptoms are frequent urination, increased thirst, increased hunger and weight loss. Additional symptoms may include blurry vision, feeling tired and poor wound healing.

Very-low-carbohydrate diets can improve blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes, with low rates of hypoglycemia and other complications. The researchers, led by Belinda Lennerz, MD, PhD, and David Ludwig, MD, PhD, of Boston Children’s Hospital, now call for controlled clinical trials of this approach.

Carbohydrate restriction is a good approach in type 1 diabetes, it was used before the discovery of insulin, it extended children’s lives, for years. It can be used together with insulin for good result, introduction of insulin affected carbohydrate restriction in diabetes patients.
