A new Respirology review and analysis reveals a link between fast food consumption and an increased risk of having asthma, wheeze, and other allergic diseases like pollen fever, eczema, and rhino-conjunctivitis.
The analysis included 16 studies. In terms of different types of fast food consumption, hamburger intake was most prominently associated with allergic diseases in a dose-dependent manner, irrespective of consumers’ income.
Poor quality diet may contribute to the development and progression of asthma and wheeze through different mechanisms because of the absence of essential vitamins and minerals in some fast foods. Apart from asthma, fast foods can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, premature cardiac death, cancer and strokes.
