High blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart disease. Researchers from UCL discovered the link between cool indoor temperatures and high blood pressure, this explains why more people experience hypertension during winter. Exercise and healthy diet can lower the risk of hypertension.

Researchers found that every 1°C decrease in indoor temperature was associated with rises of 0.48 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and 0.45 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. This may be responsible for more deaths from stroke and heart disease when it is cold. Home temperature should be consider when patients are diagnosed.

The research team interviewed some participants of the study with a questionnaire covering general health and lifestyle factors. Then they had nurses to visit participants in their homes, measure their blood pressure and to take an indoor temperature reading in their living room.

Researchers found that cooler temperatures at home can be associated with higher blood pressure. Ensure the room temperature is around 21 degrees to prevent hypertension, measure your blood pressure frequently, wear thick clothes and visit the doctor if you notice any problem.
