Human cells contain internal clocks which are programmed to turn on or off thousands of genes at different times of the day or night, these internal clocks prepare human for everything. Genes and their circadian rhythm-which recurs naturally on a 24-hour cycle influence every aspect of lives. When they are in sync, they do their job but when these daily rhythms are disturbed, the clocks cannot send out the right messages to these genes and the body and mind will not function very well.

Few days of reduced sleep can change appetite, eating more calorie-dense junk food late at night when the stomach is meant to rest and repair. When this occurs repeatedly, every system in your body starts to malfunction, immune system has a circadian component resulting in  succumbing to illnesses from insomnia to depression, migraine, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia and cancer. It can also make recovery more difficult.

To enjoy longevity, adjust activities to the optimal times of the day that are most in sync with human clocks, eat when the body metabolise foods efficiently, be active when brain and body are functioning at peak levels. Get the right hours of sleep for your age, adjusting the timing of living and making easy lifestyle changes can restore human rhythm.

Avoid late-night exercise in a gym as it can increase cortisol (produced by the brain to get the body ready for activity), delaying the nightly rise of melatonin, leading to poor sleep. Intense exercise also raises body temperature and heart rate, don’t go for a walk at night.
